Sometimes I find myself studying an image and asking what role certain elements in it play in my reaction to it. I even wonder whether the image is better with or without these elements. In the case of this beautifully deceptively simple scene, I am fixated on the ladder leading down from the pier to...what? Of course you positioned it perfectly with the horizon, but it does break the symmetry. Still, I like it there in the shot. Maybe I just like asymmetry. But I think I like it because, in a strange way, it connects the viewer in a direct way to the rest of the scene. In my mind I can walk to the end of the pier, climb down the ladder, and swim away into total serenity.
